Protein Myth #5

Soy protein is equal in quality to animal protein. This is fallacious. Eggs, meat and dairy products all have superior protein quality compared to soy. Soy is low in the essential amino acid methionine. This limits its ability to promote tissue growth and overall health. Animal studies suggest that whey and meat protein are much more protective against cancer than soy protein. Soy protein has also been found to trigger type 1 diabetes in animals. I do not recommend soy protein as the chief source of protein in the diet. The only soy foods I recommend are miso, tempeh, and other fermented soy products. These fermented soy foods contain compounds known as isoflavones, which appear to have anticancer effects. Soymilk and tofu do not contain isoflavones in the form that is cancer protective, and soymilk contains phytates that block mineral absorption. Use of soy-based formulas has caused zinc deficiency in infants. Soy protein may lower cholesterol, but it does so in part by lowering beneficial HDL cholesterol.
